June 2009. For the immigrants from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Greece is the first European country they set foot on after a long and dangerous journey from their homelands. Every Friday, thousands of these people gather outside the Attica Aliens Division, in the hope that the police officers that will arrive on Saturday morning will choose them for an interview. The interview is the first step in the application seeking procedure for political asylum or a green card. If the immigrants finally manage to obtain the much-coveted papers, after a long bureaucratic process, they will be one step closer to entering their final destination, the countries of Western Europe.
